Day Number 3

Yesterday was a breathtaking day…quite literally! After staying in the Clarion in Colorado Springs, we hit the road running off to Pike’s Peak, which was only minutes away. At Pike’s Peak we rode on a cog train that brought us to the top of the mountain. The ride to the top was absolutely beautiful and it was a little over an hour long. The altitude at the top of Pike’s Peak is 14,110 feet. At the base of the mountain, the temperature was in the mid 60’s….at the top it was 17 degrees with a wind chill factor bringing it down to 4 degrees. That, along with the lack of oxygen and amazing views were what made it utterly breathtaking. Pictures cannot do it justice. From the top of the mountain, we saw the continental divide and could see about 85 miles away.

After riding the cog up and down the mountain, we went to the “Cave of the Winds”. We got a tour of that cave, which was pretty fascinating. We had a rather animated tour guide, which made the tour an unforgettable experience! We left soon after the tour to head to the Royal Gorge.

The Royal Gorge was another amazing experience. We rode across this Gorge in a cable car that was suspended by one single cable. Oh, and did I mention this was 1,000 feet in the air, overlooking the gorge? We also got to walk across the Royal Gorge Bridge, which is the highest single span suspension bridge in the world. Lastly, we rode on an incline train (the steepest in the USA), which brought us to the bottom on the gorge and back. I can’t even begin to describe the views from the bottom looking up, seeing the rushing Arkansas River at the bottom and the bridge and cable car against the western blue sky!

We left the gorge and headed north through Denver, having our 1st time to sit for a few minutes for a nice dinner. We continued north through Boulder, and on to our final destination of Estes Park, CO, which is at the entrance to the Rocky Mountain National Park. The historic Stanley Hotel was where we finally landed for the evening...bringing day number 3 of our trip to an end :)
